30 tips for successful cross-country flying

#9: Listen to your intuition

Some of the worlds best cross-country pilots are in the NOVA Pilots Team - along with people like you & me. Together we have collected the 30 most important tips for successful cross-country flying. Tip #9 is about feeling more like yea or nay.

One of our Team Pilots sent us the following tip: "I have been flying since the end of the 1980s and just like when driving a car, I have developed a kind of “sixth sense” when flying. I‘m sure you know the feeling. You‘re driving towards a junction and something seems strange to you – and suddenly someone cuts you up. But you are aware and can compensate for other’s mistakes.

When flying this kind of stuff happens to me too. For example, when it comes to right of way when everyone is piling into a thermal – everyone has experience of that. I don’t know how it works, but I always listen to my intuition. This can even result in me not even taking off, even if it doesn’t look so bad and others are flying quite happily. But at that moment it has to be right for me and if my gut says “no”, then I trust that instinct."
